Appreciating Nature

I gave my students a weekend homework assignment: find one thing in nature that you appreciate, that you like. Notice three details about it. Come ready to share Monday. So I need to do the assignment too, and already I have something. This morning, as Adam and I were marveling at the spectacular (beautiful but quite frightening) ice storm that slicked our streets overnight, we saw a chipmunk bobbing up and down from a hole he'd dug. It's like he was checking to make sure it was safe, so he was in and out of that little burrow. We don't see things like this so often, living in town, so it was very cool. Then the chipmunk ran toward the street, stopped as a truck was coming and ran back, then straight up a tree.

If you'd like, comment and share something "natural" you notice this weekend!

Chipmunks hibernate, so this one is off schedule, but that's one more thing to appreciate. And you wouldn't see that often in winter. Actually, I just looked at Wikipedia and it doesn't mention hibernation, but it does mention storing food for winter.

I appreciate ice, because it gave me another day off today!
