Playing in the Dirt

I have so much to say about how excited I am for summer, I'll just have to summarize. Basically, I can't wait. Four more student days, then one staff day. Adam and I have already started working in our yard. We completely neglected it last summer because we'd just moved and there was so much to do in our living room, but now we can give it a lot more attention. Our main projects are painting the outside of the house (notice the weird mark on the side, in the picture above) and getting trim on our living room windows. Otherwise, we want to grow stuff. This is an experimental year, and I do know that not everything we try will work out; we've never done this before. Well, Adam kind of did it at our other place, so he's ahead of me. I am really interested in learning how to grow vegetables, because I think being able to subsist on one's own may come in handy someday soon.... In honor of our goal, I'm going to read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle again ---- It really affected me last summer, but then I didn't do anything with the knowledge I'd gained. Then I forgot most of it.

The first picture shows the rocks I got through Freecycle that I want to use for various little garden areas. The second shows how messed up a lot of our yard (well, mainly one side) is right now. I'm not sure why, but I think the fact that we failed to pick up dog crap for like FIVE MONTHS may have something to do with it. I've been 100% keeping up with it now, but....we still have to figure out this problem. I got some grass seed. Does anyone have any other ideas, either about what caused the patches or what we can do about them?
I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend. Happy Spring!

I wish I could help you but I am totally new to taking care of property as well. I'm sure some wise garden guru will help you out.

I have now put my name on the long list for that books, sounds perfect!

You can get rocks through free cycle?! Amazing!

our back yard looks about the same. damn dogs. :)- heehee! it's because of the acid in the poop and pee which goes into the soil. oh yeah. :)- you can try putting lime on the affected areas (you can buy it in bags at most garden shops). it's a dry stuff that you can just shake on and is natural. the other thing that works is LOTS of water. and then to avoid future problems, try to water the spots on the lawn that monty goes potty on the most. that will help dilute it.

you might also want to rake up the affected spots and plant new seeds after you do the lime treatment.

there, i did my good garden angel duty for the day. :)- hope this information helps!

now if i just get off my lazy butt, i might do the same for my own yard!

and have fun this summer. i've been daydreaming about a garden too. now vinny and i just need our own place!
