Poem: "Words from the Front" by Ron Padgett, from How to Be Perfect. © Coffee House Press, 2007. Reprinted with permission.
Words from the Front
We don't look as young
as we used to
except in dim light
especially in the soft warmth of candlelight
when we say
in all sincerity
You're so cute
and
You're my cutie.
Imagine
two old people
behaving like this.
It's enough
to make you happy.

Lovely. It does make me happy.
I love this! It reminds me of the summers I used to work at the Minnesota State Fair. One day during the run of the fair was always deemed "Senior Citizens Day," where seniors would get discounted admission. I would see these older couples walking around the fairgrounds hand-in-hand as if they were on their first date as teenagers -- I suppose the fair brought back some of those old feelings for many of them. Love is a pretty amazing thing.
