COLD

Creative title, I know, but --- not much else to say right now when you live in Northern Minnesota. I've been lucky to experience two VERY fast days this week at school, the two-hour late starts. I admit I was hoping for a day off today, but it turns out that it's a good thing we had school. Climb Theatre came and gave our students a terrific performance -- and a way for me to have a very good conversation with my class (about college, tuition, "I'm not smart enough to go to college" as a bad excuse, showing up and working hard as the things that matter most, scholarships they will be able to get as Native Americans, etc.). Also, we were able to work more on their books that MUST be done tomorrow. This is the best project I've done in four years with my students, and I am so happy they will have something concrete to keep for (hopefully) years to come. I am glad it's almost done, though. New quarter Monday.

I have a meeting tonight at the city hall, regarding a proposed assessment for our neighborhood (streets, underground stuff) that I suspect may be unnecessary. I don't feel like going, but I have to. I don't want to pay for this (unless I find out that there are good reasons), so I need to be informed and try to do something about it.

Ok. Off to make spaghetti. TGIF tomorrow :)

Yesterday was the "warmest" day all week, but the schools were closed. Cold, yes, but not like today, which is minus 42 right now. No wind yesterday until the afternoon. I think some of the schools canceled and the rest of the superintendents got "group think."

Tell us about that book you have in the right margin.

Do your kids know about

College Horizons (http://collegehorizons.org/)

or

College Summit (http://collegesummit.org/)?

They're both excellent programs. Take a look, and let me know if you want any more info. I've worked with both of them, and can also give you a list of scholarship resources for Native students. They are an extremely sought after group of students, especially at private colleges (which often give significantly larger financial aid packages than public ones, offsetting the cost differential).

Oh it has been so cold, hasn't it? This is such a crappy winter. I had to go out yesterday, I have to go out today too and I want to just stay home in bed. I hope that the meeting went OK and that you get to take some time and relax and hide from the cold.

Thank you so much for the bday wishes and every time I make lemon balm tea I think of you! I always use the mug you sent me.
