It is a little after eight, and I've been going through the "5-minute Freewrites" my students handed in today. I'm slowly trying to get them less petrified of writing, and I think it's starting to work :) Here's the quote of the day from a smart, sassy middle school girl:
"The desks look unorganized, I'm talking about the teachers desks. Their are papers everywhere on their desk. Nowonder why somebody lost there notebook."
I wrote back to her, "A cluttered desk is a sign of a busy mind." Then I drew an oversized smiley face.
Is that what "they" say about a cluttered desk? Or...is it something else?!

I wonder what that seventh grader will think of your comment . . . :)
RE: Vonnegut -- try Galapagos or Hocus Pocus or Breakfast of Champions. It took me awhile to acquire a taste for him, too.
A Man without a Country is especially good because it's nonficiton (very rare for him) and published recently -- so it's a great political/ philosophical/ historical critique of current events.
I'll lend it to you when/if you're visiting this month. :)
I'm not sure what "they" say Laura but your idea sounds right on. I'm so glad the kids are writing! Yay Laura!
hehe, that's great. i still run with the idea of being messy because i'm creative. :-) whatever works.
